Q: A lifestyle shoot is supposed to be authentic, so you don't need to prepare, right?

A: It depends!

A father tosses his son to get him smiling during a family photo shoot.

As a person who fits the perfectionist, type A, eldest sister archetype, I have to fight the urge to manipulate my surroundings. But a little manipulation won't ruin the value of your lifestyle photos, especially if it means you won't regret the state of your hair/home/grass length/etc. when you receive your gallery.

Personally, I believe there is charm in a messy playroom or toys and diapers scattered about the living room, but I get it – not everyone would want to frame that on their walls.

It's valid to want to tidy up your home, fix your children's hair, or coordinate everyone's outfits. If that will make you cherish your final images more, then go for it! But don't feel bad if someone gets grass-stained knees, a pouty face, or a dirty diaper during our session. That's real life!

How you handle unpredictable moments as a family brings out your true essence, and THAT is what makes a beautiful, authentic photograph. So, here are five of my realistic tips for preparing for a lifestyle photography shoot with your family:

1. Communicate with your photographer beforehand.

Work out all the shoot and location details before your session date so that everyone is on the same page when it comes time for photos. This will relieve a lot of stress for everyone!

2. Share your photo inspirations with your photographer.

Your photographer likely won't recreate your Pinterest board, so be sure to hold your inspiration pics with an open hand. Your photographer will understand the elements that mean the most to you and will look for opportunities to capture the same sentiments during their time with your family.

3. Allow yourself plenty of time.

Try to make the lifestyle photoshoot the only thing scheduled for the date. If you feel rushed before or after your shoot, you will likely struggle to be in the moment – and that's where the magic happens!

4. Make the experience about something other than photos.

If you haven't noticed a theme emerging yet, your photos will be so much more authentic if you're truly enjoying the moment. This might mean distracting your family with an activity they easily get immersed in. Check out my other blog post about activities your family might enjoy during a photo session.

5. Know that you don't have to be smiling the whole time.

If you're booking a lifestyle photography session, you're probably hoping for a lot of candid photos. Everyone smiling and making eye contact with the camera does not give candid, so please relax. Instead, enjoy the moment! Make eye contact with your family members. Laugh like you would if a photographer wasn't there. Hug your loved ones without worrying if it's a flattering pose. I promise it's beautiful.

Take a deep breath. Your photos will be so full of love, and you'll cherish them for many years to come.
